Read All About It!

Purpose: Reading comprehension and scanning practice for intermediate/advanced level learners.

Preparation Time: 15-20 minutes

Materials: Pens, paper, newspaper articles

Preparation: Use an English language newspaper, or a collection of articles you’ve gathered over time. Choose one article for about every four students in the class, and write two comprehension questions for each article. The level of difficulty can be adjusted according to the students’ abilities.

Procedure:

1) Mix the comprehension questions up and dictate them to the class.

2) Place the newspaper articles around the room. Explain that each article contains the answers to two questions.

3) Students work individually, moving around the room trying to find the answers to the questions.

Variations:

• For a less advanced class, give each group of four students an article and ask them to prepare ten questions based on the content of the article. Groups exchange articles and questions and are given 10-15 minutes to answer as many of the other group’s questions as possible.
