Pass It Along

Purpose: to practice vocabulary while following directions

Prep Time: 2 to 20 minutes

Materials: a set of vocabulary cards, picture cards or objects that are related to today’s lesson

Prep: obtain the materials

Procedure:

1. Students and the teacher all stand in a circle. If the class is large, students can stand in two circles. Everyone may sit in a circle, if desired.
2. Review the meaning of direction words: right, left, across by asking students to point in these directions.
3. Give an object to a student on your right.  Say, “Pass to the right.”  Continue giving objects to that student and as students continue passing to the right until all objects are in some students’ hands.  It is ok if students pass at different rates.  Say, “Pass to the right,” a couple more times and then,”Stop.” 
4. Hold up anything you have in your hands and say, “I have a ______.” Any students holding objects also say “I have ______.”  A student with more than one object names all of them. 
5. Repeat, this time saying, “Pass to the left.”
6. Repeat, this time saying, “Pass across.”
7. If some students still have difficulty naming some of the objects, repeat as needed until most students can name all of the objects.  Be patient as you may tire of the game before the students will. The repetition will be beneficial.

Variation: To make the game easier, start with fewer objects and then introduce a few more later. To make the game a little harder, increase the rate at which students pass objects. Students who are not holding objects can say, “She has _______.”
