What Do You Like?
Purpose: This interactive speaking activity encourages learners to ask follow-up questions in partner or small group conversations.
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Materials Needed: A paper with words from a category listed out (foods, drinks, hobbies, locations, etc.)
Procedure:
- Pass out the papers and review the words as a group.
- Have the learners circle three words that they like (to eat, to drink, to do, to visit), and cross out three words that they don’t like.
- As a class, brainstorm some questions that you can ask people about their choices (i.e. Which food/drinks/hobbies/places do you like? Which don’t you like? How often do you eat/drink/visit/go…? What do you like about…? When was the last time you…? etc.)
- Have the learners stand up and mingle. They should share their preferences, then ask a few follow up questions.
- Bring everyone back to their seats and ask them who they had the most in common with and why? Learners can answer out loud, or write their responses in a notebook. (For learners who need additional support, provide a sentence frame and model several examples: I had the most in common with ___ because we both ____.)
Modification for Teaching Online: Use the screen sharing option to show a list of options. Have the learners write down three words that they like, and three words that they don’t like in their notebooks. Brainstorm the questions that learners can ask, and type them on the screen or in the chat. Put learners into small group breakout rooms to ask each other questions about their choices.
