Purpose: Giving students a chance to deepen their vocabulary knowledge by identifying and explaining how a pair of words might be related.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Materials Needed: Vocabulary words that are familiar to the students.
Procedure:
- Generate a target word and a list of words that have some connection to that word.
For example:
Target word: SCHOOL.
Words related to school: fish, principal, house, student, teacher, attend, safety, elementary,
board, university, summer, attend - Share the words with the students. Model how a word from the list is related to the target word. For example, "Fish is related to school because a group of fish is called a school of fish" or "student is related to school because the people who learn at school are called students."
- Ask for a student or two to share examples. When you are sure they understand the concept, have them work in pairs or teams to explain how the remaining words relate to the target word.
- Have pairs or teams share out their answers. Call out any examples where there there are multiple relationships. For example "schools have boards that your write on" and "the leadership of a school is called the board."
