Building connections between learners helps with student retention and outcomes. Here’s a simple game to build relationships when learners need to warm up, wind down or take a break from a rigorous task.

Prep: Print the true/false cards double-sided with “true” on one side and “false" on the other. Print enough cards so that each learner can have four.

Procedure:

  1. Put learners into groups of four or five. Give each player four true/false cards.
  2. The first player says a statement about his or her life (example: I have nine brothers and sisters).
  3. Other players decide if they think the statement is true or false. Each player puts one card on the table to show if they think this statement is true or false.
  4. The first player tells everyone if the statement is true or false. Then, he or she takes all of the cards on the table that show the wrong answer. For example, if the statement was false, the player will take all the cards that say “true.” The players who said the statement was false get to keep their cards.
  5. The game ends when someone runs out of cards. Everyone else counts their cards and the person with the most is the “winner.”
  6. Redistribute the cards evenly and begin another game.

Be sure to model the activity before setting learners off to do it on their own.
