Thanks to Rachel Lyness for this great activity!

Purpose:  This fun group warm up activity encourages learners to talk about patterns and connections that they see between answers. It works well on any digital platform where learners are on camera.

Preparation Time:  none

Materials Needed:  set of 3-6 warm up questions

Procedure:

  1. Have learners to take out a blank sheet of paper.
  2. Ask the first warm up question (i.e. “What is your favorite color?” or “Where do you shop for food?”).
  3. Have the learners write their answer on the sheet of paper, and hold the paper up to the camera.
  4. Encourage learners to talk about the answers (i.e. “How many people have the same answer as you?” “How many people answered ___?” or “What answer is the most interesting? Why?”).
  5. Ask the next question, and repeat steps 3 and 4. Continue until you have completed all of the questions

Expansion: After asking a couple of questions, call on a learner to come up with the next question for the group to respond to. Give several learners the opportunity to ask questions during the activity.
