Rewriting Text

Purpose: to practice paraphrasing and generate a more “readable” text.

Materials: High-interest reading passage, pencil and paper. 

Preparation Time: 10 minutes to find appropriate reading passage

Procedure: 

• Choose a high-interest published text.
• Read a  sentence (or paragraph) or two out loud to the student.
• Have student retell you in their own words what was read.
• Write down exactly what the student says, repeating it as you write.
• When done with whole passage, choose an appropriate reading strategy to practice. For example, you and the student could read together, you could read and the student repeats what you read, or the student could read and you provide assistance as necessary.
