For this installment of the Remember This?! Series, where we remember great resources for tutoring and teaching, let’s turn the clock back to 2015 to look at this oldie, but goodie–BATT!

Beginning Alphabetics Tests and Tools (BATT) is a free resource that ABE/ESL tutors and teachers can use to develop the following knowledge and skills with their learners:

  • Roman alphabet letters
  • English letter-sound patterns
  • Sight or high frequency words
  • And thus…fluency and comprehension

This phonics resource appropriate for any level includes:

  • Teacher-friendly tests for determining known and unknown skills
  • Evidence-based reading instructional practices, orders, approaches, and five lesson plans for teaching unknown skills
  • Teacher-tested lists of other activities and materials
  • Time-saving teacher resources (printable letter cards, word lists, etc)

Here’s what some educators have said about BATT

“This week’s dictation activity was encouraging to me [because] I observed students reading their sentences to one another, pausing when they recognized a word family, and correcting/adjusting their pronunciation independently.”

“Gobi was a classic ‘never held a pencil’ student who couldn’t write her name. Recently we were doing a sentence writing activity [and] she wanted to use the names of her children. Together we sounded out their names and she wrote the letters that corresponded with the sounds. I could tell she was so proud!”

“So many students begin to sound out words rather than guess or ask someone else to tell them what it says.”
