The Phonic Stories from Literacy Centre of Expertise are a rare thing–free, beautiful materials easily used online to support and enrich phonics instruction with beginning literacy adult learners who do not have literacy in their first language. The series includes forty interactive digital books (also available as printable PDFs) featuring adult characters and situations. There are four sets: Initial Sounds, Short Vowels, Long Vowels and Comparing Vowels. Each set includes a short teacher’s guide that outlines the consonants and sight words in each book (example: Initial Sounds Teacher’s Guide). There is also a short instructional video for educators that shows how the stories can be used to build oral language, print awareness and phonics knowledge. The books are ideal for learners who have a basic understanding of the sound group (consonants, short and long vowels) and are ready to see several at one time for additional practice and review.
