One Word Summary

Purpose: To help students understand and practice the concept of summarizing.

Materials: Photos and/or text

Preparation Time: 10 minutes to gather materials

Procedure: 

1. Show the students a picture. Tell them one word you would use to describe/summarize the picture. Explain WHY you chose that word.
2. Ask students to share what word they would use. Also ask them to explain why they chose that word. 
3. When students are comfortable doing the activity with images, have them do it with text. You can have them give a one word summary of a story, paragraph or sentence.
