New Comparisons

Purpose: To practice the use of “as…. as” comparisons.

Preparation Time: Five to 10 minutes.

Materials: None.

Preparation: Make a list of conventional similes to use as examples.

Procedure:

1. Teach the class a few “as… as” similes that are commonly used in English, for example, “as good as gold” or “as sweet as honey.”
2. Suggest a few adjectives and have students make up their own comparisons.
   • For low level, appropriate adjectives would be: happy, long, short, pretty, smart, clean, tall, small.
   • For intermediate: lazy, wise, powerful, ugly, fresh, colorful.
   • For advanced: juicy, graceful, brilliant, humble, sly, delicious, humble.
3. Have students share their comparisons and discuss them with the group.
