Literacy Work Stations to Support Pre-Beginning Learners

Literacy work stations materials for pre-beginning learners are now available on our website!  

You may already be familiar with the Pre-Beginning Curriculum and ESL Story Bank on Literacy Minnesota’s website.  You can now find additional materials that were developed to support learners’ work with these stories and curriculum. The literacy work stations materials were designed to help learners develop literacy skills in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.  

The Pre-Beginning Curriculum utilizes stories from the Pre-Beginning ESL Story Bank, and the literacy work stations materials provide practice with language found in these stories.  For example, in the Money:  Week 1 of 2 Pre-Beginning Unit, there is a story called A New Bed, which can also be found in the ESL Story Bank.  In the collection of literacy work stations materials, you will find materials for a vocabulary activity, a comprehension activity, and a phonemic awareness activity that used the language and vocabulary directly from the story.

There are several ways in which the literacy work stations materials can be used.  You can follow the instructions in the Literacy Work Stations Teacher Handbook, or use them in any way you see fit.  If you are a professional educator and will be at ABE Summer Institute, stop by the Poster Session, ESL Literacy Work Stations, on Thursday between 1:15 and 2:00 to see the materials and how they are used in two different settings.

It does take some work download the materials, prepare them and learn to use them, but once you and your learners have a routine, the preparation time is less and less and students benefit so much!
