List 10!
To give students a chance to review vocabulary, alphabetics or other facts or language concepts. Great independent warm up and “door knocker” activity for the beginning of any class.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Materials Needed: direction sheet, slips of paper with categories
Preparation:
Create category slips relating to the concepts you want to review. e.g.:
Jobs
Words that begin with “b”
Words that rhyme with “cat”
Things you find in the classroom
Words related to World War II
Etc.
Create a directions sheet than can be posted/shared:
1. Choose a category slip and list 10 things in the category in your notebook.
2. Use your phone to look some up if you need to.
3. Share the list with a partner.
4. Ask a partner if they can think of 5 words that you didn’t think of.
(For lower levels, reduce the numbers in the directions sheet, if you wish (i.e. 5 instead of 10 in step 1 and 2 instead of 5 in step 4).
Procedure:
Review directions with students and model activity by following the directions.
When students are comfortable with directions, have them do the activity independently.
Once learners are comfortable doing the activity independently, use it as a door-knocker activity by posting the directions on the wall and instructing students to read them when they enter class.
