Purpose:  to improve learners’ ability to listen for individual words in a longer word stream

Preparation Time:  5 minutes

Materials Needed:  a class set of black markers, copies of a listening text transcript

Procedure:

  1. Choose a short listening text. This can be a song, a recording from a textbook, a short video, or a recorded conversation.
  2. Give each learner a copy of the transcript for the listening text and a black marker.
  3. Have each learner use the marker to cross out 10 words in the text (adapt the number up or down depending on the level of the class).
  4. Collect the transcripts, shuffle them, and hand them out.
  5. Play the listening text and have the learners fill in the words that have been crossed out. Play the text as many times as needed for the learners to fill in all of the words.
  6. Put a complete copy of the transcript up so that learners can check their work, then play the listening text a final time while the learners follow along.
