The Kasi & Dami Series from Literacy Centre of Expertise is a series of ten free simple stories about a Nigerian family in Canada made for Beginning Literacy English Language Learners. Each story is about six to ten sentences of about 20-25 words, many of them repeated within the story, so they are very accessible to emergent readers. Each story is accompanied by several activities for learners to work with short vowels, word families and sight words. Learners also practice listening discrimination, blending, tracing and writing, and each story wraps up with a comprehension exercise. They contain high-quality pictures and deal with adult topics. There are two sets–stories 1-5 and 6-10, each with a student document and accompanying teacher document with answers, available as printable PDFs.

This series is an enriching supplement to systematic phonics instruction and is part of the Literacy Centre of Expertise’s collection of free, contextualized phonics resources including their Interactive Foundation Stories and Phonics Stories, both described in previous Tutor Tips. Check them out!
