I Can/I Can't

Purpose:  to practice using the forms “I can” and “I can’t”

Prep time: none

Materials:  none

Prep:  This activity is best done in small groups or circles of 6-8 people.  If your class is larger, model the activity with the whole group, then divide into smaller groups.

Procedure:

1) Tell the person on your left something you can do.  For example: I can swim.

2) The sentence travels all around the circle, with students using can/can’t as appropriate to themselves.

3) The objective is to find as many things as possible which everyone in the group can or can’t do.

Extensions:

Use this activity to practice the present perfect as it relates to expressions of experience.  For example: I’ve been to Duluth.  The objective is to find things that everybody or nobody in the group has done.
