Alisha Odhiambo Scholarship Program 

The Alisha Odhiambo Scholarship is currently funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and administered by the Minnesota Health Literacy Partnership, a program of Literacy Minnesota. One scholarship will be awarded each year during the nationally recognized October Health Literacy Month. 

As an Alisha Odhiambo Scholar, you will receive the following: 

  • $10,000 scholarship award toward tuition, books, and fees. 

  • Membership with the Minnesota Health Literacy Partnership. 

  • Semester-long internship with the Minnesota Health Literacy Partnership. The internship project can be applied towards a degree requirement such as a final thesis or research experience.

  • Only U.S. citizens can apply. 

  • Must be a member of the Minnesota Health Literacy Partnership. Applicant may enroll upon award. 

  • Must be enrolled full-time during the 2024-2025 academic year in an undergraduate or graduate degree seeking program at an accredited Minnesota college or university in one of the following academic areas:

- Biomedical Sciences 

- Communications/Journalism 

- Public Health 

- Library Science 

- Healthcare Administration 

- K-12 Education (health education focus) 

- Pre-Health Professional School (e.g., Allied Health, Dental, Medical, Pharmacy, Psychiatry, Nursing, or Veterinarian Medicine) 

- Psychology 

- Social Work 

- Any other relevant medical or healthcare studies 

  • Must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA. 

  • BIPOC, LGBTQ+, rural born residents, people with disabilities, and first-generation college degree-seeking students and graduates are highly encouraged to apply. 

Download the scholarship application checklist to make sure that you are collecting all the correct materials. Below is the list of application required documents links to the templates and files you will need to complete each required section:

  • Diversity Statement Template: Describe your status as a member of one of the diverse groups listed in the scholarship announcement and how your background will promote diversity within the field of health literacy. (Maximum 150 Words, 12-point Times New Roman)

  • Essay Template: Commitment to Scholarship in Health Literacy (12 point Times New Roman, 2-pages max) 

  • Resume/C.V. 

  • Unofficial transcript 

  • 1 signed letter of recommendation. Recommendation must come from a non-familial academic instructor, mentor, or health professional. 

  • Application opens: Aug. 1, 2024 

  • Submission deadline: Aug. 31, 2024, 11:59 PM CST 

  • Award notification: Oct. 1, 2024 

  • Complete IHA Health Literacy Specialist Certification: Dec. 31, 2024 

  • Internship start date: Jan. 15, 2025 

  • Internship end date: May 18, 2025 (option to extend internship into summer)
