The Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act give learners with disabilities the right to reasonable accommodations in adult education programs, as well as in other environments that many of our learners go on to navigate, like workplaces and colleges.

It’s important for learners to know their rights and be able to advocate for themselves, but it can be hard to find accessible explanations of these topics. That’s why Literacy Minnesota and PANDA have partnered to produce a guide that helps explain learners’ rights and how to exercise them.

The guide is:

Presented in clear, accessible language, no higher than a fifth grade reading level.
Available in text and audio/video formats.
Available in English, Spanish, and Somali.

In the guide, learners will find:

Definitions of key vocabulary, like disability, accommodations, reasonable accommodations, documentation, and confidentiality.
Examples of accommodations.
Examples of mental and physical health conditions that can give you a right to accommodations.
Sample language that you can use to talk to your school about accommodations.
Contact information for helpful resources.
