Fluency Self-Assessment
Part of building self-efficacy with literacy students is helping them evaluate their own skills. One way to help them develop these skills around reading fluency is to use a simple reading fluency checklist.
Procedure:
Introduce this tool AFTER you have explained and taught the concepts of reading fluency.
Explain the form and tell them that you are going to listen to them read out loud and evaluate their reading fluency. After they have read, walk them through your responses and explain what they mean. You may choose to do this several times (over several lessons) until they understand the rating system.
Next, have them read another passage out loud. Together, go through the rating sheet and have student share how they would evaluate themselves on each point. Discuss your observations and discuss any differences of opinion. Again, you may choose to repeat this activity until they are comfortable.
Next, have the student read a passage out loud, evaluate themselves, and share their responses with you.
Finally, have them read a passage SILENTLY and have them complete the form, thinking about their silent reading proficiency.
Revisit the fluency checklist every few weeks to help students measure their improvement.
